Education
With the rising cost of living and fallen incomes in the country, many Ghanaian parents are not able to afford fees charged by schools, neither are they able to afford stationery and uniforms for their children. Indeed many children must often go to school on empty stomach. And many must regularly skip lessons to labour on the streets in order to earn a little money to support them. In the event many are compelled to stop schooling altogether. With the help of a grant donated by Fist Data in the USA, RUCNET launched the Needy Child Support Program for the year 2005. It was conceived as a supportive tool for needy school children in rural communities who usually cannot concentrate on schooling because they must regularly skip classes, or stop school altogether, to work and earn money to cater for themselves and/or their entire families. Since then, RUCNET has engaged in procuring and distributing school supplies and uniforms to needy children in the communities it operates.
Literacy Programs for adults: Literacy and good health are bedfellows. Unfortunately, most of the patients who visit our clinics for medical care cannot read and write and therefore cannot understand and follow patient care instructions given by the healthcare providers. Illiteracy is therefore a major hindrance to quality healthcare in our community. RUCNET offers a wide range of literacy programs to illiterate adults who want to read and write and do basic arithmetic. RUCNET also offers basic bookkeeping skills to our clients so that they can balance their budgets at home.
