Healthcare
Health care infrastructure in Ghana is severely underdeveloped: a population of over 20 million is served by just 1,200 doctors. This ratio is no better with nurses and pharmacists. The problem is even more acute for the rural population, as the distribution of health facilities in Ghana today is heavily skewed in favour of the urban centers. This pattern of distribution of health facilities, however, does not correspond with the distribution of the country's population, since urban Ghana represents just about one quarter of the country's population. For rural dwellers, the nearest medical facility is often prohibitively far away. To help address this great problem and bring sustainable health care to the doorsteps of the rural population, Rural Care Network (RUCNET), a Kumasi-based NGO, has made improving rural health care delivery one of its central missions through its Community-Based Holistic Care Project.....more
Education
With the rising cost of living and fallen incomes in the country, many Ghanaian parents are not able to afford fees charged by schools, neither are they able to afford stationery and uniforms for their children. Indeed many children must often go to school on empty stomach. And many must regularly skip lessons to labour on the streets in order to earn a little money to support them.
